چکیده

The thick sequence of Quaternary sediments preserved within the northern North Sea contains important information about glacial history, palaeo-oceanographic conditions and slope stability this region during last 2.6 million years. interplay between glacial, fluvial contouritic processes can be determined from seismic stratigraphic studies. Here, horizon, attribute geomorphological interpretations an extensive 2D dataset (?100,000 km2) two 3D cubes (?18,400 are integrated with lithological data eight exploration wells to map sandy sedimentary units. Mapping horizons facies reveals that, in addition prograding derived Norwegian mainland, succession includes wedge-shaped units internal clinoforms building out East Shetland Platform, relatively flat-lying acoustically stratified central Sea, aggrading low-amplitude reflections on continental slope. lowermost unit sediment is interpreted as ?800 km3 earliest Pleistocene (?2.6 Ma) turbidite-contourite deposit, which turbidites a delta Platform transition seaward into Drift. intercalated glacigenic showing that was major source area for delivery coarse-grained Early (?2.6–0.8 Ma). distribution geometries suggests contourites continued develop slope, including trough-mouth fan, throughout Quaternary. Our also provides high-resolution analogue architectures produced by down-slope along-slope other margins.

Ocean Currents Modeling along the Iranian Coastline of the Oman Sea and the Northern Indian Ocean

The Makran Coast (Iranian Coastline of the Oman Sea on the Northern Indian Ocean) plays an important role in country’s future navigation and trade due to its accessibility. In 2014, the Iranian Makran coastline was selected by the PMO to be studied as the Phase 6 in the series of Monitoring and Modelling Studies of Iranian Coasts with all disciplines being in investigated including currents. Al...

The Quaternary glacial history of the Lahul Himalaya, northern India

This paper presents the first glacial chronology for the Lahul Himalaya, Northern India. The oldest glaciation, the Chandra Glacial Stage, is represented by glacially eroded benches at altitudes greater than 4300 m above sea-level. This glaciation was probably of a broad valley type. The second glaciation, the Batal Glacial Stage, is represented by highly weathered and dissected lateral moraine...

Assessing the relative efficiency of fluvial and glacial erosion through simulation of fluvial landscapes

The relative rates of erosion by rivers and glaciers, and the topographic effects of these two different styles of erosion, remain outstanding problems in geomorphology. We use a quantitative description of local fluvial landscapes to estimate how glaciated landscapes might look now had glaciers not developed. This indicates the landscape modification attributable to glacial erosion. We present...

Late Quaternary and present-day rates of slip along the Altyn Tagh Fault, northern margin of the Tibetan Plateau

[1] Both Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements and studies of Late Quaternary faulting are consistent with a slip rate of 10 mm/yr along the central segment of the Altyn Tagh Fault and a systematic decrease in that rate toward the eastern end of the fault. Dates of terraces above and below laterally offset terrace risers yield bounds on Quaternary slip rates that range from those that ag...

Postglacial (after 18 ka) deep-sea sedimentation along the Hikurangi subduction margin (New Zealand): Characterisation, timing and origin of turbidites

10 Recent sedimentation along the Hikurangi subduction margin off northeastern New Zealand is 11 investigated using a series of piston cores collected between 2003 and 2008. The active Hikurangi 12 Margin lies along the Pacific-Australia subduction plate boundary and contains a diverse range of 13 geomorphologic settings. Slope basin stratigraphy is thick and complex, resulting from sustained h...
